Happy Women's History Month! Every Friday in March we will be celebrating the incredible women that have helped to shape the entertainment lighting industry.

Peggy Eisenhauer is an accomplished lighting designer in both the film and theatre worlds. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon, she began volunteering at her local theatre when she was just 13. She started out painting scenery, and then eventually became the board operator for all of their shows, as well as the electrician, stage hand and the best climber around. It was there that Peggy designed her first show, America Hurrah by Jean-Claude Van Itallie, when she was 15 years old.

Shortly after graduating with a Fine Arts degree from the drama department, Peggy began working as an assistant for Jules Fisher. After seven years of working together, they decided to form a design partnership, Third Eye Studio, in 1992. Their first show together as partners was the 1985 Broadway musical Song and Dance.

Since then, Peggy has taken the lighting world by storm. With over 50 theatre credits including Victor/Victoria, Once on This Island and Assassins, as well as credit in many notable films such as Chicago, The Producers and Burlesque, Peggy has solidified herself as a mainstay of the industry.

Her work has earned her three Tony awards, two Drama Desk awards, and countless nominations.

Happy Women's History Month! Every Friday in March we will be celebrating the incredible women that have helped to shape the entertainment lighting industry.

Anne Valentino is a world-renowned lighting control developer with a career spanning over three decades. After obtaining a Masters in Fine Arts in Technical Theatre from the University of Wyoming, Anne worked in set design and construction in her home state of Louisiana before eventually heading west to Texas. It was there that she was offered a position as a technical director at a newly built theatre.

Her experiences as a technical director led her to an interest in the business side of the lighting industry. She moved to New York to work as a technical writer and then eventually moved on to doing design and build work for TV studios and refitting theatres. During this time she began to work on her first lighting consoles.

Anne retired from her role of Senior Product Manager for Entertainment Controls at ETC after being associated with the company for nearly 30 years. Through her career, she co-designed the Obsession control desk, consulted and helped build the EOS console, and worked on the groundbreaking Virtuoso console for Vari-Lite and Light Palette 90 for Strand Lighting.

Earning herself and Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Engineering Award (Emmy 2001), the Gottelier Lifetime Achievement Award (PLASA 2016), and Distinguished Achievement Award in Lighting Design and Technology (USITT 2018), Anne truly established herself as a leader and authority in the world of lighting control development and has paved the way for women to come up behind her.

Happy Women's History Month! Every Friday in March we will be celebrating the incredible women that have helped to shape the entertainment lighting industry.

Tharon Musser, a pioneer of modern day lighting design, was nicknamed the Dean of American Lighting Designers. She is best known for her work on Dreamgirls and A Chorus Line, which was the first production to use a fully computerized lighting console.

After earning her MFA from Yale University in 1950, Tharon's first lighting credit was Long Day's Journey into Night at the original Helen Hayes Theatre in 1956.

Tharon designed over 150 productions on Broadway from 1956 - 1999, including The Wiz, Jerry's Girls, The Odd Couple, and Lost in Yonkers. She took home her first Tony Award for Best Lighting Design in 1972 for Follies. She also won the award for A Chorus Line and Dreamgirls, and was nominated for seven other productions.

In 1996 Theron was honored as a USITT Distinguished Lighting Designer.

Happy Women's History Month! Every Friday in March we will be celebrating the incredible women that have helped to shape the entertainment lighting industry.

Jean Rosenthal is considered a pioneer of Lighting Design. She began her career as a technical assistant to Martha Graham at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in 1929. In 1931 she began her formal education, studying Lighting Design at the Yale School of Drama.

Jean helped to create the role of Lighting Designer - before her influence, the lighting was often the work of the set electricians and production designer. One of her major contributions in the industry was the elimination of shadows using floodlights from an upstage position and controlling angles and mass of illumination to create contrasts without shadows.

Jean was the lighting designer for hundreds of productions including Broadway musicals West Side Story (1957), The Sound of Music (1959), and Fiddler on the Roof (1964), as well as for The New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera.
